Grande innovatore in tale campo è stato il senese Paolo Mascagni, le cui tavole dell’Anatomia Universa, oltre a mostrare per la prima volta il sistema linfatico, rappresentano il corpo umano a grandezza naturale, come su un tavolo settorio, nella prospettiva anteriore e posteriore, con un criterio stratigrafico, dal piano muscolare più superficiale fino allo scheletro.
